Most of these scams are easy to detect!
The scammer enter profiles on sites, (Like the one associated with this board) and mass email most male members at the same time, with the same message!

It's very easy to identity most of these scammers!

In your first email, open the email headers.

Look for a notation called 'the Bat!' It will have a version number, 1.62, etc.
This is a mass emailing program used by spammers and scammers.
If you see it, you are dealing with a scammer!

The next thing to do is check the IP in the email headers against where the lady claims to be.
You can find info on how to do this online. Check the last 'recieved from' IP. If it's not from the same area/city your lady claims to be in, you are dealing with a scammer.

99% of these scams come from the Republic of Mari El, in the former Soviet Union.
The scammers will claim to be anywhere else in the world, usually, but MARI EL.
If you see some indication of Mari El, either through IP, or by a reference to "mari el dialup', keep away!

You can also GOOGLE parts of the letters! The letters are used over and over again!!
The SAME letters are used with different names, and different pictures.
GOOGLE strange phrases!

Google the email address, and name, and any address you may be given.

You can also check the various scam sites to look for pictures of your lady.
Do NOT believe that the pictures were stolen from 'your lady' and used by bad people! You are in touch with a scammer!

Never send money!!!! NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ANy request for money by Western Union or Moneygram is a red flag!!

NEVER SEND MONEY!

They will come up with all sorts of stories and emergencies. NEVER SEND MONEY!!!

Do not get obsessed with the person in the pictures!!! It's not likely you are in touch with this person, but actually a criminal!!!!!! Usually a male!!

I agree with stepan_fetchit about Mari El. It is full of scammers. But I must correct you about "The Bat" program. Yes, many scammers use it, but this program doesn't have futures for spamers. This program is like MS Outlook.

Finding 'the Bat!' in the email headers is a reliable means to identify a Russian scammer.
There is also a new version of 'the Bat!' out, called 'Voyager'.
If you see 'Voyager' in the email headers, it's the same as 'The Bat!'.

I have worked hundreds of Russian Scammers, and looked at the details of thousands more.

'The Bat!' was used by over 98% of these scammers, and was not the only means used to identify them as scammers.

Many fraudulent dating sites and anti-scam sites try to discount the use of 'the Bat!', as well as the uninformed or ignorant I have been told it is used by spammers, also. I don't bother to look at the email headers of spammers.
'The Bat!' is designed to handle massive amounts of email, with multiple email accounts.

"The Bat!" has everything a scammer needs plus more.

From http://email.about.com/cs/thebattips/qt/et020902.htm

Quote:
Fortunately, accessing and managing multiple accounts works like charm with The Bat!. In fact, managing multiple accounts is not much different from managing one account, just more of the same.

With scammers having multiple accounts it's perfect for them. Finding The Bat! in an email account's headers is almost a dead giveaway it's been sent by a scammer.

Frankly speaking I use The Bat! too. It is much more easy and convenient for me then MS Outlook. By the way as far as I know you can make several accounts in Outlook too. And I don't see the differences between Outlook and The Bat! in this question.

Let me put it another way then. I've dealt with hundreds of Russian romance scammers. About 80% of the time I've found The Bat! in the headers and only once did it turn out not to be a scammer.

A simple question, I know how to track an email from its IP, but how to know where the email address is registered? I see in this forum that it's possible to know even the address of where the email address is registered and the owner's name, but how?

Not very clear question. May be you wanted to ask how to know location by ip address? If so then I use http://www.techinfo.net.ru/ip2ruscity/
This service gives information about country and city. Only one problem. It gives information in Russian.

What a ridiculous idea! It is just another mail client, and actually a lot more convenient one. The possibility to set multiple emails is not even the number one plus of The Bat! And Outlook allows that as well, but dealing with Outlook you have to choose the email address each time you write a letter, while with the bat you simply switch to another email box.
Just so you know, The Bat is absolutely spread in the CIS NOT because we are all spammers, but because it is a lot cheaper and you can get free updates while most people use hacked Windows and thus are stuck with the old Outlook version.
Trying to locate a scammer with purely technical issues is just as useless as "setting a system" while playing roulette!

I think that you know that "The Bat" - is popular mail program in Russia.
So in the headers of the letter you can find something like:
X-Mailer: The Bat! (v3.99.3) Professional
It means that this letter was sent by this program.
